1 dead and 5 injured after shooting inside Mall of Louisiana

One person was killed and five others injured after a shooting at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, authorities said. Officials say the situation is no longer an active threat and appears to have started as a targeted dispute between two groups who began exchanging gunfire in the food court.

Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse Jr. said surveillance footage suggests the shooting stemmed from an argument between the groups, with several bystanders caught in the chaos. While authorities initially reported 10 people were taken to hospitals, that number was later revised to five injured victims.

Police later confirmed five suspects were taken into custody, and the investigation remains ongoing. Mayor Sid Edwards vowed those responsible would be found, while Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and Attorney General Liz Murrill said they are closely monitoring the case and working with law enforcement.

After the shooting, shoppers and employees were evacuated through tunnels into a secure holding area, while paramedics set up a triage center near JCPenney. Mall spokesperson Lindsay Kahn called it a terrifying day for everyone involved.

The incident adds to a growing number of mass shootings in the U.S., with 144 recorded so far in 2026, according to the Mass Shooting Tracker.
