Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other senior officials were swiftly evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) Dinner at the Washington Hilton hotel on Saturday evening after loud bangs resembling gunshots disrupted the event.

Attendees described chaos inside the ballroom as multiple loud pops were heard shortly after the dinner began. Guests ducked under tables, Secret Service agents drew weapons, and security personnel rushed the president and his party from the stage. USA Today reporters inside the venue confirmed hearing the sounds and seeing members of the press drop to the floor.
Trump later issued a statement confirming the incident:
“Law Enforcement has requested that we leave the premises, consistent with protocol, which we will do, immediately. I will be giving a press conference in 30 minutes from the White House Press Briefing Room. The First Lady, plus the Vice President, and all Cabinet members, are in perfect condition. We will be speaking to you in a half an hour. I have spoken with all the representatives in charge of the event, and we will be rescheduling within 30 days.”
A suspect was apprehended at the scene, according to law enforcement officials and multiple reports. No injuries were immediately reported. The Secret Service and other authorities secured the hotel as investigations continued.
The annual black-tie gala, traditionally a gathering of journalists, politicians, and celebrities, marked Trump’s first attendance in more than a decade and his first as president in his current term. The event was postponed following the incident.
Eyewitness videos and photos circulating on social media showed police running through the hotel corridors and agents responding rapidly. One witness reported hearing security yell at an individual in a corridor before a commotion and shots.
White House officials and the Secret Service have not yet released additional details on the suspect or motive. The incident is under active investigation.
